Old 401(k)s
With your retirement assets, out of sight should NOT be out of mind! You need to consolidate all of those old 401ks!!
Lets face it, most everyone has at least a couple 401k sitting in a retirement plan with previous employers. The only time you think of it is twice a year when you get the statement. But that report sits unopened, over in a corner of your house with other marketing mail that will be shredded and never thought of again...until 6 months later. You keep promising you will look at it and possibly reallocate it, but life gets in the way and that does not happen.
A plan participant leaving an employer typically has four options (and may engage in a combination of these options), each choice offering advantages and disadvantages:
- Leave the money in your former employer's plan, if permitted
- Roll over the assets to your new employer's plan, if one is available and rollovers are permitted;
- Roll over to an IRA
- Cash out the account value
What are you waiting for? Let us help you consolidate all of your old 401(k)s and get them working for you!

How Many Old 401(k) Statements Are Sitting Unopened in Your Home?
Take a look around your house.
Do you have old retirement account statements, unopened envelopes, or paperwork from previous employers sitting in a drawer somewhere? If so, you're not alone. Many people change jobs multiple times throughout their careers and leave behind 401(k) accounts that receive little to no attention. Years pass, statements pile up, and eventually those retirement accounts become forgotten.
Your retirement deserves more than a drawer full of unopened statements. It deserves a plan, professional oversight, and a fiduciary who puts your interests first.
Why Are You Ignoring Money That Could Be Working Harder for You?
Your old 401(k) may represent tens of thousands—or even hundreds of thousands—of dollars dedicated to your retirement. Yet many people haven't looked at those accounts in years.
They don't know:
- How the account is invested
- Whether the investments still fit their goals
- How much risk they're taking
- What fees they're paying
- Whether the account is properly diversified
- If the investments have been reviewed or adjusted recently
Meanwhile, that money continues to sit where it was left years ago.
Retirement Assets Deserve Professional Attention
One of the biggest mistakes investors make is assuming their old 401(k) is automatically taking care of itself. In reality, retirement accounts often require periodic reviews, monitoring, and adjustments to help ensure they remain aligned with your goals, risk tolerance, and retirement timeline.
That's where professional guidance can make a difference.
Scott Cash Thompson, CFP®, Founder and Owner of Clipper Wealth, helps individuals and families evaluate old retirement accounts and determine whether those assets are positioned to support their long-term financial goals.
